#1

Wii Sports – 82.9 million

When the Nintendo Wii was released, this game was included for free (almost everywhere), making it instantly available in every living room. The result? Fun family evenings, muscle pain the next day and thousands of broken televisions because people forgot to put on the wristband while bowling.

#2

Minecraft – 300 million+

It once started as a hobby project of one man (Notch) in his bedroom. Now it is the biggest game of all time with more than 300 million copies sold. The concept is simple: the world consists of blocks and you can build whatever you want. From simple huts to working computers. Minecraft is digital Lego for every generation and will probably never be overtaken.

#3

Grand Theft Auto V – 205 million+

It's bizarre: GTA V was released in 2013 on the PlayStation 3. We are now three generations of consoles further and the game is still on the sales lists. The satirical action game is the most profitable entertainment product (film, book or game) in human history. The enormous open world and the popular GTA Online ensure that the cash register keeps ringing.

#4

Tetris (EA) – 100 million

Tetris has been around since prehistoric times, but EA's specific mobile version (from 2006) is a monster hit. Before everyone played Candy Crush, this was the game on every phone. The simple act of stacking blocks remains the most addictive activity ever invented. The 100 million mark has now been more than passed.

#5

PUBG: Battlegrounds – 75 million

Before the game became free in 2022 (“Free to Play”), 75 million people opened their wallets for this survival game. PUBG kicked off the Battle Royale craze. A hundred people in a plane, one survives. The tension is unbearable. Fortnite may have gotten bigger (because: free), but PUBG was the pioneer for which we paid en masse to be able to wave a frying pan.

#6

Mario Kart 8 (Deluxe) – 72.7 million

Originally released on the failed Wii U, but thanks to the Nintendo Switch it has become an unprecedented sales monster. The recipe has been golden for 30 years: racing, throwing bananas and getting hit by a damn blue shield just before the finish. Everyone with a Switch has this game, and rightly so.

#7

Red Dead Redemption 2 – 67 million+

When Rockstar Games (the makers of GTA) releases something, you know it's going to be a big hit. This cowboy epic is probably the most detailed game ever made. The tragic story of outlaw Arthur Morgan makes men cry. The details are bizarre: from horses that become nervous at gunfire to beards that grow in real time. An absolute masterpiece.

#8

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – 60 million

There's a joke going around that developer Bethesda released this game on almost every platform, including toasters and refrigerators. And that's almost right. Since 2011, we have been addicted to this open world full of dragons and dungeons. Whether you play it on the Xbox 360, the PS5, the Switch or in VR: Skyrim remains the standard for RPGs. “Fus Ro Dah!” is now a household name.

#9

Terraria – 58.7 million

It is the ultimate “Indie dream”. Made by a small team, but now larger than most million-dollar productions from major studios. It is often called “Minecraft in 2D”, but that is too simplistic. With hundreds of weapons, magical spells and gigantic bosses, Terraria is an action-adventure that will delight you. The game costs almost nothing and keeps selling.

#10

Super Mario Bros. – 58 million

In 1985, the gaming industry was in shambles, until an Italian plumber saved the world. Without Mario Bros. (and the NES), the rest of this list probably wouldn't have even existed. The tunes are still stuck in your head 40 years later and the level design is legendary.
