Top 10 Best Selling PC Games of All Time

The time when we raced to the store on our bikes for a large cardboard box with a CD-ROM in it is far behind us. The digital revolution – led by Steam – has changed the gaming world forever. But one thing is certain: the PC is here to stay. While consoles are replaced every few years, the computer remains the domain of the true enthusiast (and the modders). Which titles have most often tempted us to open our wallets over all these years? We ignore the Free-to-Play giants such as Fortnite and League of Legends and look purely at the hard sales figures. These are the ten biggest blockbusters in PC history.

PUBG: Battlegrounds – 42 million (before F2P)

Before this game became free in 2022, 42 million PC gamers had already opened their wallets. PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds put the Battle Royale genre on the map. The thrill of jumping out of a plane with 100 people and hoping to find a frying pan to defend yourself was unprecedented. Fortnite later took off with the masses, but on PC PUBG remains the king of the box office.

#2

Minecraft – 33 million (PC version)

On the list of best-selling games on all gaming platforms, Minecraft is far in the lead with 300 million+ sales. The original Java version on the PC has sold 'only' 33 million times. It remains the story of the century: Markus Persson (Notch) put a demo online and became a billionaire. The game is digital Lego for the entire world and probably the most influential game ever made.

#3

Terraria – 32 million+

Often dismissed as “Minecraft in 2D”, but that is an insult. Terraria is an action adventure par excellence. While in Minecraft you mainly build, in Terraria you collect magical weapons to defeat god-like bosses. The game has been out since 2011, costs almost nothing, and keeps getting updates. An absolute must-have for every PC gamer.

The ultimate proof that you don't need a budget worth millions. Eric Barone (ConcernedApe) made this game alone in an attic room. He did everything himself: programming, drawing and the music. While the industry was making loud action games, he gave us peace. Growing parsnips, fishing and flirting with the villagers. The PC version continues to break sales records.

#5

Garry's Mod – 25.4 million

Actually, Garry's Mod isn't even a game. It's a digital sandbox where you can use Half-Life 2's files to create chaos. From flying bathtubs to the bizarre Skibidi Toilet videos on YouTube: it all comes from here. For a few euros you literally have endless possibilities, and that apparently sells like a charm.

#6

Phasmophobia – 21 million+

The corona hit. When we were all inside, we went hunting for ghosts en masse. The unique thing about Phasmophobia? The spirits are listening through your microphone. If you whisper in the dark, “Are you here?”, and the ghost whispers back in your ear, you definitely need new underwear. This indie game, made by one person, blew all the major studios away.

#7

Diablo III – 20 million+

The launch in 2012 was an unmitigated disaster. Everyone remembers Error 37: you bought the game, but you weren't allowed in. Still, we kept clicking. Blizzard knows better than anyone how to perfect the 'loot loop' (monster death -> better sword -> bigger monster). Despite the false start, it became the fastest-selling PC game of its time.

Rest – 20 million (estimate)

In Rust you start stark naked with a rock on a beach and your only goal is to survive. Usually by bashing in your neighbor's skull. The game is known for its merciless community. You spend weeks building a base, go to sleep, and wake up the next morning in ruins because a 12-year-old from Russia blew up your entire possessions. Frustrating? Yes. Addictive? Absolute.

#9

Euro Truck Simulator 2 – 15 million+

No guns, no dragons, but… trucks. What started as a niche game for hobbyists grew into a global phenomenon. It turns out to be damn relaxing to drive from Rotterdam to Poland in a Scania full of frozen chicken while the rain taps against your window. A cult hit that leaves the big boys behind.

#10

World of Warcraft – 14 million (base game)

In 2004, Blizzard changed the world by bringing millions of players together in Azeroth. Marriages occurred, studies failed and social lives evaporated. Although the game runs on subscriptions, the physical boxes (and digital keys) of the base game were sold 14 million times. And that's without counting the countless expansions.
