Marco Iacobucci Epp / Shutterstock.comThe biggest football party ever is just around the corner, but the infirmary is fuller than the stadiums. In North America, names that should have saved the day are missing. The unlucky ones and the losers: these are the ten biggest absentees from the 2026 World Cup.
Which one of these deserves the top spot? Cast your votes below and let us know your personal ranking in the comments!

Victor Osimhen (Nigeria)
Nigeria choked in the play-off final against DR Congo. For the Nigerian sensation of Galatasaray it is a personal drama. At the age of 27, he has to passively watch how the world's best compete without him. The chaos within the Nigerian association has cost the Super Eagles their heads. It is a loss for African football. The continent's best striker is simply sidelined this summer.
Gianluigi Donnarumma (Italy)
The Italian goalkeeper will not play in the World Cup again. It is the third time in a row that the Azzurri have missed the boat after a defeat against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Donnarumma is only 27, but has never smelled a second of a world championship. The crisis in Italy is now truly official. Series A apparently no longer produces the winners of the past. For a country with four world titles, this absence is a national shame.

Robert Lewandowski (Poland)
The curtain has fallen for the legendary Polish striker. After the 3-2 defeat against Sweden in the play-offs, he immediately announced his retirement. He scored eighty times for his country, but a world title was never an option. At the age of 37, he left the stage through the side door. Lewandowski is the most successful Polish footballer ever, but he ends his international career without World Cup glory. The young guard will now have to figure it out for themselves.

Rodrygo (Brazil)
Brazil has to make do without its greatest creative weapon. Rodrygo tore his cruciate ligament in the match against Getafe in March. National coach Carlo Ancelotti now has to seriously improvise on the wings. For the Real Madrid star, the dream of 2026 is finally over. He took to social media to call it one of the worst days of his life. Brazil loses a player who was worth gold in qualifying.

Hugo Ekitiké (France)
The unlucky one at Liverpool. His Achilles tendon ruptured in the Champions League quarter-final against PSG. At the age of 23, he was the great hope for the French attacking line. France has plenty of talent, but his explosiveness will be sorely missed. He will be out of action for at least six months and will therefore miss the tournament of his life. A hard blow for a boy who had just won his starting place.

Xavi Simons (Netherlands)
The Dutch team suffered a huge blow at the end of April. Simons left the pitch at Tottenham groaning after a serious knee injury. His World Cup dream shattered on the grass of the Premier League. Ronald Koeman must now hope that Tijjani Reijnders can lead the way in midfield. The Netherlands does have depth, but loses a unique talent in Simons. This takes a serious hit to the team's creativity.

Ademola Lookman (Nigeria)
The best African footballer of 2024 also stays at home. Together with his buddy Osimhen, he could not turn the tide against the fierce Congolese. For the neutral fan, this is a huge disappointment. Lookman was crucial to Atalanta's success, but things went wrong at national level. The absence of this winger takes a lot of color out of the tournament. Nigeria is forced to watch from the bench this summer.

Sandro Tonali (Italy)
The best Italian midfielder of his generation watches from the sidelines. Like Donnarumma, he is paying the price for Italy's collective failure in qualifying. Tonali is only 26 and has the power to make any team stronger. Instead of shining in North America, he has to wait another four years for another opportunity. It's a waste of talent at the highest level. The Italian fans will often curse him during the competition matches.

Serge Gnabry (Germany)
Germany loses a lot of experience in attack. An adductor injury during training in April put an end to all World Cup plans. Julian Nagelsmann thus loses a permanent fixture in his tactical plan. For thirty-year-old Gnabry it is a bitter pill at a very bad time. He played almost all the qualifying matches and was ready for the world top. Now he has to watch younger dogs take his place.

Dominik Szoboszlai (Hungary)
Liverpool's star got stuck in a tough qualifying group. Hungary simply lacks the quality to keep up with the absolute superpowers. Szoboszlai is 25 and belongs on this stage, but his fellow countrymen could not carry him. He is probably the most expensive spectator in the world this summer. A gem for the eyes, but without a ticket for the main tournament. The depth in the Hungarian selection was simply not sufficient this year.
