All The Divergent Series Movies in Order

Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) lives in a futuristic Chicago where society is divided into five factions. But Tris turns out to be 'Divergent', someone who doesn't fit into a single faction, and that makes her dangerous. She joins the fearless Dauntless faction and meets the mysterious instructor Four (Theo James). What follows is a mix of training, romance and the discovery of a sinister plot that threatens all of society.

Tris and Four are on the run as war between the factions flares up. The leader of Erudite (an icy Kate Winslet) wants to eliminate all Divergents and uses a mysterious box as her excuse. Insurgent is darker and more spectacular than the first film, with more action, virtual simulations and psychological tests. Tris is tested harder than ever, and not just physically.

Tris and her allies escape over the wall surrounding Chicago and discover what lies outside. What they find isn't freedom, but a new form of control and genetic experimentation. Allegiant was meant to be the first half of a two-part finale but received poor reviews. The world grows bigger but also more complicated, and the focus on genetics made it all feel rather sterile.

The fourth and final film, Ascendant, was originally scheduled for 2017 as the conclusion of the series. But after Allegiant's disappointing box office, the project was shelved. There was talk of a TV movie or series, but that came to nothing too. As a result, the film series ends without a real finale. Tris' story remains open... unless you read the books.
