Top 10 Ridiculous Sex Scenes in the Movies

Film and romance have gone hand in hand for more than a century, but filmmakers sometimes miss the mark in intimate scenes in monumental ways. Sometimes a scene is intended as razor-sharp satire, but just as often it is a serious attempt at eroticism that completely derails into vicarious shame and giggles. Table of contents

Team America: World Police (2004)

Trey Parker and Matt Stone (the makers of South Park) deliberately pushed all the boundaries of the permissible with their action film with wooden marionette puppets. When lead actors Gary Johnston and Lisa found each other in a hotel room, the duo decided to film the most explicit sex scene in film history, but performed exclusively by puppets on visible strings. What starts as a parody of dramatic Hollywood romance degenerates within seconds into a minutes-long sequence of bizarre acrobatic positions, wild gymnastics and unsavory acts. The scene drove the American film censors into despair: Parker and Stone had to adjust the editing nine times to avoid a devastating 'Adults Only' inspection.

Sausage Party (2016)

After successes like Superbad, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg decided to make a computer-animated film for adults about talking supermarket food. What started as a parody of sappy animated films culminated in the most insane and transgressive final scene ever shown in a regular cinema. Once the food discovers that it has been saved from human consumption, an unprecedented orgy erupts between sausages, hot dog buns, bagels, tacos and jars of peanut butter. For several minutes the viewer watches a frenzied cacophony of culinary positions and food eroticism.

The Naked Gun (1988)

Safe sex reached its absolute peak in this legendary slapstick classic by the trio Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker. When the clumsy police inspector Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen) and Jane Spencer (Priscilla Presley) finally give in to their passion after much fumbling, they take no health risks. The couple appears on screen in life-size, inflatable condom suits made of blue and pink latex that enclose their entire body from head to toe. The loud squeak of the abrasive rubber and the steely, deadly serious looks of the actors make this one of the most iconic visual gags in comedy history.

The Room (2003)

Cult director Tommy Wiseau delivered one of the most famous misproducts in film history with The Room, and the sex scene between Johnny (played by Wiseau himself) and Lisa (Juliette Danielle) is the absolute low point. Accompanied by cringeworthy, cheap R&B music and bathed in candlelight, Wiseau was clearly trying to create a sultry, romantic masterpiece. However, the performance is so wooden and strange that cinema audiences invariably burst out laughing. During the act, Wiseau mainly seems to work on his opponent's navel, while his bare bottom remains prominently visible for several minutes. To complete the drama, the filmmaker shamelessly repeated the exact same images as a flashback later in the story.

#5

Deadpool (2016)

Superhero films are rarely known for their explicit eroticism, but the R-rated action comedy Deadpool decisively broke with that tradition. In a lightning-fast montage, we see how mercenary Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) and his girlfriend Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) indulge their passion for an entire calendar year during literally every official and unofficial holiday. From creeping out with fake vampire teeth on Halloween to an intimate session in turkey hats on Thanksgiving, no holiday is left untouched. The absolute highlight is the infamous scene on International Women's Day, where Vanessa takes control and a strap-on while Wade watches loyally.

Scary Movie (2000)

The Wayans brothers spared nothing and no one in their parody of teen horrors such as Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. When leading actress Cindy Campbell (Anna Faris) finally decides to lose her virginity to her boyfriend Bobby (Jon Abrahams), the romantic evening derails into pure slapstick within seconds. The climax of the scene culminates in a literal tidal wave: Bobby's discharge is so powerful that Cindy is launched into the ceiling like a human missile and remains there, motionless.

#7

Howard the Duck (1986)

George Lucas produced this infamous flop about a cynical, cigar-smoking anthropomorphic duck who accidentally ends up on Earth from his own dimension. Although the film was presented as a light-hearted family adventure, it contains one of the most disturbing scenes of the 1980s. Rock singer Beverly Switzler (played by Lea Thompson) tries to seduce the alien duck into bed, including sultry looks and sensual caressing of its plumage. The dialogue ("Have you ever kissed a duck?") and the suggestion of intergalactic bestiality baffled moviegoers at the time.

Shoot 'Em Up (2007)

Director Michael Davis decided to throw all the laws of physics and romance overboard in this over-the-top action comedy. While gruff hitman Smith (Clive Owen) is sharing the sheets with sex worker Donna Quintano (Monica Bellucci) in a shabby motel room, the building is suddenly stormed by a heavily armed death squad. Instead of taking cover, Smith decides not to interrupt his amorous pursuits. As he happily pushes along, he shoots a dozen villains with his free hand. Amidst the groaning sounds, flying bullet casings and a crying newborn baby in the background, one of the most absurd gunfights ever captured on celluloid ensues.

In this hilarious mockumentary from comedy trio The Lonely Island, Andy Samberg plays the self-righteous pop star Conner4Real. When he wants to get intimate with his girlfriend Poppy (Imogen Poots) in a hotel room, she turns out to have some rather strange preferences. She only gets excited about reenacting current geopolitical retaliations. Before he knows it, Conner has hired an extra and an actor dressed as a heavily armed commando. While the couple share the sheets, the fake soldier in the background shoots an Osama bin Laden stand-in to the rhythm of the actions.

Demolition Man (1993)

In the dystopian future of 2032, physical contact is strictly prohibited in the blemish-free metropolis of San Angeles. When the thawed twentieth-century police officer John Spartan (Sylvester Stallone) is invited for love by his partner Lenina Huxley (Sandra Bullock), he expects some good old-fashioned lovemaking. However, instead of an intimate embrace, he gets a futuristic helmet on his head for a session of virtual sex. What follows is a hilarious display of nervous twitching, funny mouths and telepathic stimuli while both characters remain seated on a chair at a considerable distance from each other. For the rough Spartan, the cold experience is a huge deception: he quickly pulls the headset off his head in frustration. The scene remains an entertaining parody of over-the-top technology and fear of contamination.
