“Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace”
Still the undisputed number one when it comes to collective disappointment. Fans waited a whopping sixteen years for the return of “Star Wars” in 1999. The introduction of Jar Jar Binks and the endless political discussions about trade taxes were a cold shower. Although the film was visually impressive, the memory of the enormous anticlimax remains historically unique.
“Joker: Folie à Deux”
After the brilliant first “Joker”, expectations for this sequel in 2024 were truly enormous. However, the choice for a musical approach in a court setting turned out disastrous for most fans. The film felt like a provocation against the fans of the first part and left viewers stunned. It is one of the most discussed and criticized sequels in recent years.

“Borderlands”
The “Borderlands” games are known for their chaos, humor and unique style. However, the 2024 film adaptation failed to capture that atmosphere at all and became a soulless action film. Despite big names like Cate Blanchett, the humor felt forced and the story wafer-thin. It became one of the biggest commercial failures of the year.

“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”
After the mediocre “Crystal Skull”, fans hoped for a dignified and spectacular farewell for Harrison Ford in 2023. Although Ford did his best, the film lacked the soul and humor of the original trilogy. For many viewers, it felt like a long-winded repetition of moves that relied too much on digital effects. A legendary hero deserved a more powerful ending.

“The Last Airbender”
The animated series “Avatar” is a masterpiece, but M. Night Shyamalan's film certainly was not. With a shocking score of only 6% on Rotten Tomatoes, the criticism was harsh. The acting was numb and the special effects were disappointing. Fans were so disappointed that they collectively tried to ignore the film for years.

“Eragon”
Fantasy fans eagerly awaited the film adaptation of this beloved dragon rider book in 2006. The disappointment was enormous when it turned out that the makers hardly took the source material seriously. Crucial characters were missing and the plot had changed so much that sequels became impossible. To this day, it is considered one of the worst book adaptations ever made.

“Madame Web”
In 2024, fans of the Spider-Man universe were hoping for a breath of fresh air. However, “Madame Web” turned out to be a storm in a teacup with wooden dialogue and an illogical plot. The marketing promised action heroes in costumes, but they were barely seen in the film. It quickly became the butt of ridicule on social media and a symbol of “superhero fatigue.”

“Alexander”
Alexander the Great created a gigantic empire at the age of 30, but this film about his life was a historic low. Despite a star cast with Colin Farrell and Angelina Jolie, the film completely missed the mark. The story was muddled and the acting was showered with “Razzie Awards” for worst film and director. An epic story ended in a painful cinema experience.

“The Da Vinci Code”
One of the best-selling books ever was adapted into a film in 2006 starring top actor Tom Hanks. The ingredients for a hit were there, but the result was syrupy and slow. The film failed to translate the constant tension of the book to the silver screen. What should have been a thrilling puzzle adventure was labeled by critics and audiences as one of the most boring thrillers ever.

“The Matrix Resurrections”
After twenty years, fans were hoping for the return of real Matrix magic. Instead, we got a film that was mostly concerned with itself and meta-humor. The action lacked the groundbreaking sharpness of the 1999 original. To many, it felt like a redundant project that damaged rather than honored Neo and Trinity's legacy.
