Cutthroat Island (1995)
For years the example of a Hollywood flop. This pirate film with Geena Davis cost more than 100 million, but barely made anything back. The studio bankruptcy that followed made the film legendary. It wasn't until Pirates of the Caribbean came out that Hollywood dared to think about pirate films again.

Produced by Peter Jackson, based on a fantasy series with mobile cities. It sounded epic, but the crowd stayed away. In America the film even opened under ten million dollars. With an estimated loss of more than a hundred million, this was an expensive miss.
