All Evil Dead Movies in Order

Besides the films, Evil Dead has some great spin-offs. In the TV series Ash vs Evil Dead (2015-2018), Bruce Campbell returned as Ash in a hilarious, gory continuation set decades after Army of Darkness, packed with practical effects, absurd humor and nostalgic references; it ran for three seasons. And yes, Evil Dead: The Musical (2003) really exists: this stage show combines the first films with songs like 'Do the Necronomicon', complete with a 'splatter zone' where the audience gets sprayed with fake blood.

Director: Sam Raimi. Starring Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams. Five friends travel to a remote cabin in the woods, where they find the Book of the Dead and unleash demons. With excessive amounts of blood, stop-motion effects and an ominous atmosphere, this low-budget horror film became a cult classic. It's serious horror with minimal humor, but it laid the foundation for the later, more comic entries.

Director: Sam Raimi. Starring Bruce Campbell. Half remake, half sequel: Ash returns to the cabin, the Book of the Dead is read again and the horror begins anew. But this time everything goes a step further, with more grotesque effects, more absurd comedy and the legendary scene in which Ash cuts off his own possessed hand and replaces it with a chainsaw. With its unique mix of horror and slapstick, Evil Dead II is one of the best horror films of all time.

Director: Sam Raimi. Starring Bruce Campbell. Ash is hurled back in time to the Middle Ages, where he has to fight an army of the dead. The horror takes a back seat to action and comedy, making it more of a fantasy adventure with black humor. With iconic one-liners like 'Hail to the king, baby!' and 'This is my boomstick!', Army of Darkness grew into one of the biggest cult films ever.

Director: Fede Álvarez. Starring Jane Levy and Shiloh Fernandez. This serious, extremely violent reboot largely drops the humor of the originals and focuses on pure horror. A new group of young people goes to the notorious cabin in the woods, where they unleash the horrific forces of the Book of the Dead once again. Known as one of the goriest horror films ever made, with intense practical effects and a brutal finale.

Director: Lee Cronin. Starring Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan. For the first time the franchise leaves the woods and moves the horror to a Los Angeles apartment building. A single mother becomes possessed, and her sister has to fight to protect the children. With brutal kills, a sinister atmosphere and dark family dynamics, it's a refreshing and chilling addition to the series.
