Based on the video game franchise, it started as horror but quickly turned into a futuristic action series full of clones, laser grids, genetic experiments and Milla Jovovich trying to save the world from total annihilation. Subtle? Not for a second. Logical? Barely. But that's exactly the series' charm: intense, loud and shamelessly over the top. While critics raised their eyebrows, audiences happily munched popcorn. Here are all the Resident Evil films in the right viewing order, including the reboot.
Resident Evil (2002)
Alice wakes up in a mansion with no memory, but soon finds herself in the middle of an outbreak of the deadly T-virus. With the infamous laser corridor, mutants and the ruthless Red Queen AI, this film sets the tone: stylish, dark and brutal.
Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004)
Raccoon City is completely infected. Alice joins forces with a few survivors, including Jill Valentine, to escape the city. More explosive and chaotic than the first film, with the iconic monster Nemesis as a bonus.
The original is still undefeated hands down.
Resident Evil: Extinction (2007)
Mad Max with zombies. The world has turned to desert, and Alice leads a convoy of survivors through the post-apocalyptic ruins. Clones, telekinesis and desert gore: everything gets bigger and weirder. Absurd? Definitely. Entertaining? That too.
Brilliant filmmaking imo.
Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010)
Alice searches for Arcadia, a supposed safe haven, but ends up in a prison full of survivors surrounded by a zombie horde. 3D effects, Matrix-style slow motion and a giant axe-wielding monster make it visually the most over the top of the series. Pure popcorn action.
Alice searches for Arcadia, a supposed safe haven, but ends up in a prison full of survivors surrounded by a zombie horde.
Resident Evil: Retribution (2012)
Alice is held captive in a gigantic underwater Umbrella complex where simulations of world cities full of zombies take place. Old faces return, enemies become allies and nothing is what it seems. The plot is completely unhinged, but the action stays addictive.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016)
The very last battle... sort of. Alice returns to where it all began: the Hive beneath Raccoon City. Expect slow-motion fistfights, endless mutants and a big finale that tries to tie everything together, and turns out surprisingly emotional.

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021)
This reboot drops Milla Jovovich and returns to the roots of the games. Darker and grimmer, with classic characters like Leon, Claire and Chris Redfield. More horror than action, with mixed results. Fans were divided, but it finally feels like a zombie film again.
