The origin of the Mad Max universe is surprisingly restrained. In a society on the brink of collapse, Mel Gibson plays young police officer Max Rockatansky, who loses his family to a violent biker gang. His revenge marks the start of his descent into a world without order. Raw and slow-burning, but undeniably powerful.

The second film takes everything to another level. Max is now a lone drifter in a vast wasteland where fuel and survival are the only currencies. When he helps a community of oil refiners against violent marauders, an unprecedented series of chases and stunts unfolds. Pure action cinema, tightly edited and legendary in its execution.

Max arrives in Bartertown, a bizarre trading post ruled by Aunty Entity, played with gusto by Tina Turner. The film adds theatrical flair with iconic arena fights in the Thunderdome ('Two men enter, one man leaves'). More chaotic in tone, but more daring: a more mythical story with a bigger moral canvas.

After thirty years, director George Miller returned with a sledgehammer of a film. Tom Hardy takes over as Max, but it's Charlize Theron as Furiosa who truly impresses. Fury Road is one long chase, hyper-stylized and crackling with energy. A sensory assault of screeching metal, sandstorms and fiery rebellion, crowned with six Oscars and rightly a milestone of the action genre.

This prequel focuses not on Max but on a young Furiosa, kidnapped as a child from the Green Place by the ruthless Dementus. Anya Taylor-Joy plays her with restrained intensity: vulnerable but steadily growing in strength. Chris Hemsworth shines as the unhinged antagonist with a dangerous streak of charm. Furiosa builds on the foundation of Fury Road with more room for backstory and emotion.

George Miller has long talked about a further Mad Max film, The Wasteland, which would return to Max himself. Details are still scarce, but fans hope for another installment that balances reflection and spectacle. Across the series, one constant remains: the world is broken, but people keep fighting. Harder every time. More spectacular every time.
