The images from March 22, 1989 at Buffalo's Memorial Auditorium are among the most haunting in all of sports history. After a hard collision in the goal area between Steve Tuttle and Uwe Krupp, Tuttle's soaring skate blade sliced across the throat of Sabers goaltender Clint Malarchuk, severing his carotid artery and jugular vein. Blood sprayed across the ice in meters at a time, after which caretaker Jim Pizzutelli, a former Vietnam War medic, ran onto the ice and literally pinched the vein with his fingers until the trauma surgeons arrived. Malarchuk lost one and a half liters of blood and survived thanks to more than three hundred stitches, after which he was back on the ice for his team ten days later.

Two minutes after the first whistle at Old Trafford, the active football career of Coventry City defender David Busst ended in horrific fashion. An attacking corner found Busst caught between Manchester United players Denis Irwin and Brian McClair, with a collision that literally splintered his right tibia and fibula and pressed through the skin. The sight of the field, which had to be hosed down with water for several minutes, was so traumatic that United keeper Peter Schmeichel vomited on the spot and later required trauma counseling. Busst underwent 22 operations and barely lost his entire leg due to a life-threatening MRSA bacteria in the hospital.

A routine jump to deflect a three-pointer turned the 2013 NCAA final between Louisville and Duke into a collective trauma for spectators and millions of television viewers. Guard Kevin Ware pushed to block Tyler Thornton's shot, but landed completely off balance on his right leg. The tibia snapped in half with an audible snap, the bone protruding more than six inches through the flesh of his lower leg. While teammates and coach Rick Pitino collapsed on the bench in tears, Ware recovered astonishingly quickly: within two years he was back at the highest collegiate level and leading Georgia State to a tournament win.

Boundless joy abruptly turned into a medical horror scenario for Swiss Servette player Paulo Diogo on December 5, 2004. After an assist from teammate Jean Beausejour, Diogo ran to the away section to celebrate the goal and jumped into the metal fences. When he dropped off, his recently put on wedding ring got caught on the railing, causing his ring finger to be completely torn off under his own body weight. Referee Florian Etter did not immediately recognize the seriousness of the situation and punished him for excessive cheering with a yellow card, after which surgeons in the Zurich hospital found that the finger could no longer be saved and had to amputate the remainder.

The infamous 'Battle of Nantes' between France and the All Blacks in November 1986 produced one of the most bizarre stories of physical toughness in rugby. After just 20 minutes of play, New Zealand forward Wayne Shelford found himself at the bottom of a chaotic ruck, where an opponent kicked his groin with his studs full and tore open his scrotum. Shelford staggered to the sideline, had the team doctor temporarily close the gaping wound with four stitches without anesthesia and happily returned to the field, until a heavy blow to the head put him out of action for good in the second half.

The razor-sharp blades of figure skates can turn into deadly weapons within a fraction of a second when rotated in sync. During the Four Continents Championships in February 2007, Canadian Jessica Dubé and her partner Bryce Davison performed a so-called camel spin, but ended up too close to each other. The tip of Davison's skate hit Dubé's face at full speed and sliced open her nose and left cheek, instantly turning the ice dark red. Doctors needed 83 stitches and emergency surgery to repair her face, miraculously narrowly missing her eye socket; a year later the duo won bronze at the world championship.

An unfortunate turn of events led to one of the most shocking images in recent football history in August 2023 during the match between Argentinos Juniors and Fluminense in the Copa Libertadores. Former Real Madrid defender Marcelo started a passing movement and accidentally planted his full weight on the supporting leg of the sliding defender Luciano Sánchez when he landed. Sánchez's knee collapsed backwards with full force in a complete dislocation in which almost all knee ligaments tore off. Marcelo immediately burst into inconsolable tears on the field when he saw what he had done, while doctors spoke of knee damage that they had rarely seen in decades of professional football.

A dull bang that resounded throughout the entire arena brought the qualifications of the Olympic gymnastics tournament in Rio de Janeiro (2016) to an abrupt halt. French medal candidate Samir Aït Saïd landed completely wrong on the mat after jumping over the horse. The impact shattered his left tibia and fibula on the spot, leaving his lower leg dangling at a completely unnatural 90-degree angle in front of the live television cameras. The medical drama became complete when the stretcher bearers dropped him as he left the hall, but the indomitable Frenchman fought back and was back in the ring final at the Tokyo Games five years later.

The trilogy between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in July 2021 ended in a collective shock for millions of combat sports fans worldwide. At the end of a tough first round, the Irish superstar stepped back to avoid a punch and planted his left foot. Due to previous checked kicks, his shin suddenly gave way completely, causing his ankle to fold over with a sickening snap and McGregor to collapse helplessly against the cage fence. Sitting against the mesh with his lower leg dangling, he shouted curses at Poirier, but doctors had to place an intramedullary rod and screws in his leg to repair the complex fracture.

A seemingly innocent sliding tackle during the UEFA Cup match between Celtic and Olympique Lyon on October 21, 1999 turned into a medical drama within a second. The Swedish crowd favorite tried to cut off opponent Serge Blanc, but his studs got stuck in the grass, causing his lower right leg to double under his own body weight. The tibia and fibula broke off in several places at the same time. While many feared the end of his professional career, Larsson proved unprecedented resilience: after a rehabilitation of just eight months, he returned in time to play for Sweden at Euro 2000.
