Method acting is an intense process in which actors dive so deep into their roles that they partly set aside their own identity. Some are so committed that they put their body and mind on the line, starving themselves, getting injured or wearing themselves down emotionally. Here are 10 method actors who went so far it almost became dangerous.

Heath Ledger: The Joker
For The Dark Knight (2008), Heath Ledger reportedly isolated himself for weeks in a hotel room to understand the Joker's psyche. He kept a diary full of the character's disturbing thoughts and obsessively practiced the voice and laugh. He also spoke about struggling to sleep during this period. Ledger died in 2008 of an accidental overdose of prescription medication; his performance became legendary and earned him a posthumous Oscar.
Christian Bale: From Skeleton to Muscle
Christian Bale is famous for his extreme physical transformations. For The Machinist (2004) he lost about 30 kilos (63 pounds), reportedly living on little more than an apple and a can of tuna a day. For Batman Begins (2005) he then had to bulk up massively in a short time, and for American Hustle (2013) he gained weight and developed a herniated disc. Bale risks his health again and again to fully inhabit a role.
Solid runner up. (6)
Daniel Day-Lewis: The Ultimate Method Actor
Daniel Day-Lewis is the god of method acting and takes his roles incredibly seriously. For My Left Foot (1989) he stayed in a wheelchair and had crew members feed him. On Gangs of New York (2002) he wore only period clothing and reportedly caught pneumonia after refusing a modern coat. For The Last of the Mohicans (1992) he learned to live off the land, hunting and building a canoe. His dedication is unmatched, though some find it reckless.
Cinematic gold honestly.
Jared Leto: Method Madness
Jared Leto's method acting is extreme and often notorious. For Dallas Buyers Club (2013) he lost around 18 kilos and stayed in character throughout. On Suicide Squad (2016) he fully immersed himself as the Joker and reportedly sent bizarre gifts, including a dead rat, to his co-stars. For Morbius (2022) he reportedly used crutches even between takes. His methods are often seen as 'too much', but he keeps pushing himself to the limit.
The soundtrack alone makes this worth watching without question.
Robert De Niro: Anything for the Role
De Niro's method dedication is legendary. For Taxi Driver (1976) he got a taxi license and drove cabs in New York to understand the streets. For Raging Bull (1980) he gained about 27 kilos (60 pounds) to play the older Jake LaMotta. For Cape Fear (1991) he reportedly paid a dentist to make his teeth look worse, and later to fix them again. His commitment to realism makes him one of the most dedicated actors ever.

Shia LaBeouf: Suffering for His Art
Shia LaBeouf is known for his bizarre method acts. For Fury (2014) he reportedly cut his own face and refused to shower for long periods, and he had a tooth pulled around that time. He has said he took LSD for The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman (2013), and his performance-art projects have included long public stunts. His methods sometimes border on the absurd, but he keeps pushing himself.

Leonardo DiCaprio: An Oscar Through Suffering
DiCaprio is known for total commitment, but his work on The Revenant (2015) was almost insane. He ate raw bison liver on camera, crawled through freezing rivers and endured brutal cold. The shoot was physically and mentally grueling for cast and crew alike. It finally earned him his first Oscar, but he paid a heavy price for it.

Tom Hardy: His Body as a Weapon
Hardy is a chameleon, and his physical transformations are extreme. For Bronson (2008) he packed on serious muscle and spent time with the real Charles Bronson. For The Dark Knight Rises (2012) he bulked up massively to play Bane. For The Revenant (2015) he endured the same grueling freezing conditions as the rest of the cast. Hardy gives everything for a role, even if it wrecks his body.

Adrien Brody: Total Isolation
For The Pianist (2002), Brody went to extreme lengths. He gave up his apartment, sold his car, disconnected his phones and lost around 14 kilos to feel the isolation and loss of his character. He has said it took him a long time to recover emotionally. His method acting earned him an Oscar, but he called it one of the hardest experiences of his life.

Nicolas Cage: Acting as a Lifestyle
Cage is known for his eccentric methods. For Birdy (1984) he had teeth pulled without anesthesia to feel real pain. In Vampire's Kiss (1988) he ate a live cockroach because he felt the scene needed to be more real. For Leaving Las Vegas (1995) he drank heavily and filmed himself to study how he behaved while drunk. His behavior is both admirable and crazy, but Cage remains one of the most intense actors ever.
