Arcane
If there is one series that has proven in recent years that animation can be “high art”, it is Arcane. Based on the world of League of Legends, this series tells a tragic story about two sisters in a world full of social inequality and magical technology. The animation style is truly stunning, combining hand-drawn backgrounds with 3D models. The second season, which was released in late 2024 and early 2025, only confirmed this series' status as a modern masterpiece. It's exciting, emotional and visually superior to almost anything on television right now.
The Simpsons
With more than 36 seasons under its belt, The Simpsons is the undisputed foundation of modern animation. Although critics have been saying for years that the peak is over, the Springfield family remains a beacon of calm and recognisability in the media landscape. The strength of the series lies in the enormous universe of supporting characters, from Ned Flanders to Krusty the Clown. Homer's pronunciation “D'oh!” it's even in the dictionary. Without The Simpsons, none of the other shows on this list would have ever existed.

South Park
Trey Parker and Matt Stone are the kings of fast-paced satire. Because an episode of South Park can be made in just six days, the series is always on top of current events. No subject is too sacred and no celebrity is safe. What started as a crude series about four swearing children has grown into a sharp mirror of modern society. The series has now been running for more than 26 seasons and the makers continue to innovate continuously through specials and films.

Futurama
Matt Groening proved with Futurama that he could do more than just draw the Simpson family. The series about the frozen pizza delivery man Fry who wakes up in the year 3000 is a tribute to and a parody of science fiction. Thanks to a successful revival on Hulu, brand new episodes have been released in recent years.

Rick and Morty
Since its launch in 2013, Rick and Morty has become a global cultural phenomenon. The series follows nihilistic genius scientist Rick Sanchez and his insecure grandson Morty on their journeys through the multiverse. The series combines complex science fiction concepts with extremely crude humor and unexpected emotional depth. In 2025, with the eighth season now released, the series continues to push boundaries in terms of creativity and bizarre storylines. It's an absolute must for anyone who loves intelligent animation.

Family Guy
Seth MacFarlane's showpiece about the Griffin family has become an indispensable part of pop culture. The series is known for its blunt humor and the so-called “cutaway gags”, where a joke is suddenly interrupted by an absurd flashback or sidestep. Although the humor is sometimes controversial, the series has managed to remain relevant for more than twenty seasons. The character Stewie Griffin, the baby with homicidal tendencies, and the talking dog Brian create a dynamic that cannot be found in any other sitcom.

BoJack Horseman
What starts as a comedy about a talking horse who is a fleshed out sitcom star quickly turns into one of the deepest dramas on television. BoJack Horseman explores themes such as depression, addiction and the search for happiness in the glittering world of Hollywood. The series has been praised for its emotional honesty and ability to alternate heavy topics with brilliant visual gags. It's a series that makes you laugh and cry, sometimes within the same minute. In 2025, this is still seen as the absolute pinnacle of what “adult” animation can mean.

Archer
Archer started as a sharp satire on the spy genre, but grew into much more than that. The series centers on Sterling Archer, a brilliant but narcissistic spy who is more concerned with cocktails and his ego than with international security. The dialogue is fast-paced and filled with obscure cultural references. Although the series has officially ended after 14 seasons, it remains a favorite for fans of cynical humor and absurd situations. The contrast between the retro drawing style and the modern humor still works very well.

Batman: The Animated Series
This '90s series remains the gold standard for superhero animation. Warner Bros. managed to create a dark, art-deco-like atmosphere that fit perfectly with the “Dark Knight”. It was one of the first series to prove that action animation could appeal to a mature, serious audience. The voice of The Joker, narrated by Mark Hamill, is still considered by many to be the best interpretation ever. The series tackled complex themes such as loss, revenge and mental health in a way that appealed to both children and adults.

King of the Hill
After the success of Beavis & Butt-head, Mike Judge created one of the most realistic animated series ever. We follow the Texan Hill family, led by the conservative but good-natured Hank Hill. The strength of the series lies in the subtle humor and recognizable human relationships. There is now a lot of renewed attention for the series in 2025 because of the announced revival. Hank struggles with a rapidly changing society while trying to raise his son Bobby. It remains a timeless satire on American middle-class existence.
