Air (2023)
Perhaps not his best-known film, but as director and supporting actor Affleck shows everything he's good at: rhythm, sharpness and humanity. Air tells how Nike signed Michael Jordan and is far more gripping than you'd expect. Affleck's direction is tight, and his role as Nike co-founder Phil Knight is witty and layered.
Argo (2012)
The film that firmly established him as a top director. In Argo he grippingly reconstructs a CIA mission to smuggle American diplomats out of Iran under the cover of a fake sci-fi movie. The result: the Oscar for Best Picture and a nerve-racking, surprisingly funny thriller.
The film that firmly established him as a top director.
Good Will Hunting (1997)
The film that changed everything. Affleck co-wrote the script with Matt Damon, won an Oscar for it, and plays Will's loyal best friend Chuckie. His famous speech about hoping one day to knock on Will's door and find him gone is still just as powerful.
Cult classic honestly.
Dogma (1999)
Together with Matt Damon, Affleck plays a fallen angel trying to get back into heaven through a loophole. The film is absurd, philosophical and sharp, and Affleck plays it all dead seriously, which makes the humor all the stronger. A cult classic through and through.
Definitely deserves to be this high tbh.
Chasing Amy (1997)
In this early Kevin Smith classic, Affleck plays a comic book artist who falls in love with a lesbian woman. It sounds like a very '90s premise (and it is), but Affleck's sincere portrayal of romantic confusion and insecurity still holds up. A role with heart and discomfort.

Gone Girl (2014)
In David Fincher's nerve-racking thriller, Affleck plays a man suspected in the disappearance of his wife. His natural mix of charm and inscrutability makes him the perfect choice. You never know whether he's innocent, and that's exactly the point.

The Town (2010)
Affleck directed and starred in this tense crime film about bank robbers in Boston. With a sharp script, strong direction and great performances (Jeremy Renner also stole the show), this was the moment everyone understood Ben Affleck was more than a leading man.

Shakespeare in Love (1998)
Affleck has only a supporting role here as the pompous actor Ned Alleyn but makes the most of his screen time. The film won the Oscar for Best Picture, and Affleck shows a talent for self-mockery that makes him all the more likable.

The Tender Bar (2021)
Under George Clooney's direction, Affleck shows his warm, mentoring side as Uncle Charlie, who helps raise a young boy growing up around a bar full of colorful characters. A quiet film about growing up, with Affleck in one of his most sympathetic roles.

The Way Back (2020)
Affleck plays a broken man hired to coach a high school basketball team while struggling with alcoholism. It's not just a sports film but a personal drama in which Affleck seems to confront his own demons. Painfully honest, and all the more powerful for it.

The Accountant 2 (2025)
Affleck returns as Christian Wolff, the autistic accountant with a deadly other side, in this long-awaited sequel alongside Jon Bernthal.
