The Pirates of the Caribbean series started as a daring project based on a theme park attraction. Although many predicted a flop, the franchise grew into a massive success that breathed new life into the pirate genre. The five films range from groundbreaking cinema to entertaining blockbusters.

Below are all the installments ranked from worst to best.

5. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017)

The fifth film tries to repeat the magic of the original trilogy; the execution, however, leaves much to be desired. Jack Sparrow has turned into a caricature of himself and lacks the sharpness that once made him so captivating. Although the return of old acquaintances provides a touch of nostalgia, the plot surrounding Poseidon’s trident feels forced. The humor relies too heavily on lame jokes, and the visual effects overpower the story.

4. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011)

In this fourth installment, Will and Elizabeth are missing for the first time. Jack Sparrow now has to carry the film alone as the protagonist; he lacks, however, the necessary counterparts to balance his eccentricity. The search for the Fountain of Youth brings new characters like Blackbeard and Angelica, but they do not fully manage to fill the void. Despite the enormous budget, the film feels less epic than its predecessors.

3. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007)

The conclusion of the original trilogy is a large-scale epic full of complex plotlines. The battle against Lord Beckett and the East India Trading Company reaches a boiling point during a spectacular fight in a giant whirlpool. The film is somewhat messy at times due to the many characters and political games; the visual splendor and the emotional conclusion of Will and Elizabeth’s story make up for much. It is a worthy, albeit overcrowded finale.

2. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006)

This first sequel successfully builds on the mythology of the first film. Davy Jones is a visual masterpiece and a terrifying antagonist. The threat of the Kraken provides constant tension, and the action scenes, such as the fight on the Ferris wheel, are creative and spectacular. Although the film ends with a major cliffhanger, it offers enough adventure and humor to stand on its own as one of the strongest parts of the series.

1. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

The original remains unbeatable. The film is perfectly balanced: a thrilling mystery, sincere romance, and iconic humor come together here. With Jack Sparrow, Johnny Depp created a character that immediately made film history. The combination of practical effects and CGI for the cursed pirates still looks good today. It is a rare example of a blockbuster that succeeds on all fronts and laid the foundation for a global phenomenon.
