The Mission: Impossible series is synonymous with groundbreaking action and the craftsmanship of Tom Cruise. What began as a sophisticated spy thriller has transformed over the years into a platform for the most insane stunts in cinematic history. Without the help of a stuntman, Cruise performs actions that leave the viewer breathless time and time again.
1. Mission: Impossible (1996)
Brian De Palma set the tone with this methodical spy thriller. Ethan Hunt is wrongly accused of betrayal and must search for the real culprit. The scene where he hangs from a wire above a pressure-sensitive floor has since become legendary. The film leans heavily on tension and intellectual plot twists rather than brute force.
2. Mission: Impossible 2 (2000)
Under the direction of John Woo, the style shifted to a visual spectacle full of slow-motion and explosions. Ethan Hunt must stop a deadly virus. Cruise shows his physical daring in the opening scene by climbing a rock face in Utah without a safety harness. Although the film is more about style than depth, the action remains entertaining.
3. Mission: Impossible III (2006)
J.J. Abrams gave the franchise a more personal touch. We see Ethan Hunt trying to build a normal life until the terrifying arms dealer Owen Davian enters his world. Philip Seymour Hoffman delivers one of the strongest villains in the series here. The film brings a raw intensity that gave the series much-needed renewal.
4. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011)
This film redefined the franchise by taking the scale of the action to an unprecedented level. The stunt where Cruise climbs the Burj Khalifa—the tallest building in the world—is a milestone in cinema. The IMF is disbanded, and the team must prevent a nuclear disaster entirely on their own. The result is an energetic blockbuster that made the series relevant again.
5. Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015)
This installment marks the start of the collaboration with Christopher McQuarrie. The tone becomes more serious and the stunts even more dangerous. The opening scene where Cruise hangs onto the outside of a taking-off plane became world news. The introduction of Ilsa Faust also gives the series an intriguing new dynamic that is further developed in later parts.
6. Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018)
Many consider this the absolute highlight of the series. The film is a sequence of spectacular moments, including a HALO jump from 25,000 feet and a helicopter chase in the mountains. Cruise broke his ankle during a jump between two buildings but finished the scene anyway. The raw hand-to-hand combat and tight editing make this an action institution.
7. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)
In an era of artificial intelligence, Ethan Hunt takes on an invisible enemy: the Entity. The film features a nerve-wracking chase through Rome and a spectacular fight on the Orient Express. The highlight is the motorcycle ride off a Norwegian cliff, followed by a BASE jump. Despite challenging conditions during production, McQuarrie delivers top quality once again.
8. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (2025)
The grand conclusion of the dilogy promises to be the most ambitious film yet. Ethan Hunt must permanently disable the Entity to save the world. The production takes the characters to extreme corners of the globe and suggests a final farewell to the iconic secret agent. Expectations for the concluding stunts are sky-high.
