On October 31, 1929, a boy was born in Naples who would later earn the nickname 'the friendly giant.' His parents named him Carlo Pedersoli. He grew up in a modest family and showed talent in sports and music from a young age.

Before his film career, Pedersoli was a national sports hero. He was the first Italian to swim the 100-meter freestyle in under a minute, in 1949. He became a multiple-time Italian champion and represented Italy at three Olympic Games: Helsinki (1952), Melbourne (1956), and Rome (1960). He also played water polo at a high level and won gold with the Italian team at the 1955 Mediterranean Games.
