Dmytro Larin/Shutterstock.comThe Eurovision Song Contest guarantees a spectacle, but sometimes we wonder what exactly the entrants drank during the selection process. From singing turkeys to punks in wrestling suits; bizarre is often an understatement on this stage. Some were so strange that they almost won, proving that sometimes a good dose of craziness is worth more than a clean singing voice. Here are the strangest entries ever.

Verka Serduchka – Dancing Lasha Tumbai (2007)
In 2007, Ukraine came second with this song. Verka Serduchka, a drag character dressed in a shiny silver space suit with a star on the head, shocked the entire audience. The lyrics are an inimitable mix of languages and the melody will stick in your head for days. It is the ultimate proof that bizarre behavior and a good dose of glitter at the Eurovision Song Contest can go a long way.
Dustin The Turkey – Irelande Douze Points (2008)
Ireland is the country with the most wins, but in 2008 they decided to take a completely different approach. They sent Dustin The Turkey, a glove puppet in the shape of a turkey. Seated in a cart, he sang (or cackled) about winning the points. Although the act did not make it to the final, it will forever be remembered as one of the most absurd moments in the history of the festival.

Lordi – Hard Rock Hallelujah (2006)
In 2006, Finland won the Eurovision Song Contest with this song. The band members looked like terrifying monsters from a horror movie, complete with masks and mechanical wings. It was a huge shock for viewers who were used to good pop songs. However, Lordi proved that hard rock and a spectacular monster act can be a winning combination.

Guildo Horn – Guildo Hat Euch lieb! (1998)
In 1998, a singer who looked suspiciously like Gargamel was allowed to perform for Germany. During his performance, Guildo Horn climbed the stage scaffolding and handed out cookies to the audience. With lyrics such as “Beep, beep, beep, ich hab' Dich lieb” he brought a kind of musical chaos that still earned Germany an impressive seventh place.

Zdob Si Zdub – Bunica Bate Doba (2005)
The Moldovan version of the Red Hot Chili Peppers participated in 2005 with a very special guest on stage: a grandmother with a large drum. The mix of folk and punk made for an energetic act that no one saw coming. Bunica Bate Doba (Grandma Beats the Drum) became a big hit and the band has since returned to the festival even more often with equally strange acts.

Telex – Euro-Vision (1980)
Belgium sent the band Telex in 1980 with the song Euro-Vision. It was a kind of electronic parody of the festival itself. The band members stood almost stock still on stage as they chanted the name of the festival repeatedly. Their goal was to finish last, but they failed as Portugal still gave them a few points.

Michalis Rakintzis – S.A.G.A.P.O. (2002)
In 2002, Greece sent a group of men in black latex suits to the stage, making them look like an army of Robocops. The choreography was wooden and the singing was… special. S.A.G.A.P.O. remains one of those entries that makes you wonder what exactly the director had in mind when designing the costumes.

Buranovskiye Babushki – Party for Everybody (2012)
Russia proved in 2012 that the Eurovision Song Contest is for all ages. A group of grandmothers in traditional costumes stood on stage while they baked cookies in an oven. Their enthusiastic dancing and the catchy beat almost made them win; they finished an incredible second place behind Loreen.

Pirates Of The Sea – Wolves Of The Sea (2008)
Latvia was represented by a group of pirates in 2008. The act was so over-the-top that it looked like they had walked straight out of an amusement park. Complete with swords and pirate hats, they sang about conquering the seas. It was wrong, it was bizarre, but it fit perfectly into that year's motley collection.

Winny Puhh – Meiecundimees üks Korsakov läks eile Lätti (2013)
Winny Puhh is a punk band from Estonia that left an unforgettable impression during the national preliminary round. The singer looks like a cross between Chewbacca and an actor from a comedy film. The other band members are perhaps even stranger and during the performance the drummers even hung upside down from the ceiling. Although they just missed out on the international stage, this act remains a legend in the world of bizarre Eurovision entertainment.
