10 Gloriously Absurd Fictional Weapons in Movies

Sometimes movie logic is the enemy of common sense: the creations below look spectacular, but in practice they'd mostly get in the way, or be downright dangerous to the user. Still, they remain iconic and entertaining. Here are ten of the craziest weapons ever to grace the screen.

Triple-Bladed Sword: The Sword and the Sorcerer (1982)

Why have one blade when you can have three, two of which can be fired as projectiles? Storage, balance and maintenance are a nightmare, but as a cheese and sausage slicer at a picnic, this overcomplicated sword is probably unbeatable.

#2

Machine-Gun Leg: Planet Terror (2007)

After Cherry Darling loses her leg, she gets a fully automatic weapon with a grenade launcher as a prosthesis. Walking becomes one big 'clunk-clunk-clunk', and aiming seems to require some very creative poses, not exactly handy in a zombie horde.

#3

Crotch Gun: From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)

Sex Machine wears a gun in his codpiece. The trigger is suspiciously close to sensitive areas, the recoil must be painful, and reloading is embarrassing acrobatics. But hey, it scores style points on the dance floor... maybe.

#4

Rocket Hammer: Alita: Battle Angel (2019)

A giant sledgehammer with a rocket engine on its head gives extra thrust with every swing. Sounds cool, until you realize the fuel, vibrations and uncontrolled blast would probably launch you into the air, with no guarantee of a soft landing.

#5

EM-1 Railgun: Eraser (1996)

A handheld rifle that fires aluminum rounds at near light speed and sees through walls with an X-ray scope. Small problems: such a portable accelerator would roast the shooter, aluminum would vaporize and that's not how X-rays work. Science? Who cares.

#6

Bladed Bowler Hat: Goldfinger (1964)

Oddjob throws his steel-rimmed bowler like a deadly frisbee. Effective, until he has to run and fetch it: one missed throw and the gentleman killer is unarmed and hatless. A simple boomerang would have been more practical.

#7

Chakram: Xena: Warrior Princess (1995-2001)

Xena's round throwing disc cuts through anything, ricochets five times and faithfully returns. But how do you catch a razor-sharp ring without losing your fingers? Apparently only a warrior princess with extremely thick calluses needn't worry.

#8

Bat'leth: Star Trek (1990s onwards)

Klingons swear by this curved double-bladed sword with grips on the back of the blade. Unfortunately, it offers little reach or leverage: the wielder has to stand right up close and 'punch' with steel. Great for honor, less so for ergonomics.

#9

Chainsaw Hand: Evil Dead II (1987)

Ash replaces his severed hand with a chainsaw. Tough, until you ask how he starts, refuels or sharpens the thing with only one hand left. Precision work is hopeless, and one wrong angle means your own leg becomes firewood.

#10

Captive Bolt Pistol: No Country for Old Men (2007)

Anton Chigurh uses a pneumatic cattle gun to blow out locks and kill his victims. Deadly up close, but it's heavy, attached to an air tank, slow and useless against multiple opponents. More practical: ordinary firearms... but those are far less terrifyingly cinematic.
